Verizon Missing Out On Customers By Not Allowing Third Party

Third Party Mobile Content Prized by Users By Anthony Wayne Atlantic City, NJ – For years, the nation’s largest cellularcarrier, Verizon, has operated with a “walled garden” approachto mobile data services, meaning that it would not permitdownloads of independent content to its customers. The walledgarden, however, may soon fall down.
A recent survey by Handango found that third-party applicationshad a “strong influence” or “somewhat of an influence” on 69percent of consumers’ decisions to choose their carriers andphone models. The survey of over 14,000 mobile content usersfound that the ability to utilize third-party content was a“powerful influencer” in mobile phone decision making. Thesurvey also suggests that users of mobile content are moresatisfied and less likely to change brands or carriers. Up until now, Verizon and Sprint have maintained their networkssolely for its own mobile data content. This also applied to thethird-party
use of premium SMS. Industry analysts, however, arenow speculating that Verizon and then Sprint may soon permit theuse of premium SMS services on its network for third partycontent. Apparently, the carriers are starting to realize thatby not offering this service, it is akin to possibly losingmillions of potential customers. According to the Cool Ringtones Blog(http://www.coolringtones.blogspot.com), a blog site thatreports on the mobile ringtone industry, long time ringtoneprovider Ringingphone (http://www.ringingphone.com) is nowproviding ringtones and cellular wallpapers to Verizoncustomers. It is believed that this is the first instance wherean independent ringtone provider has begun selling ringtones andwallpapers to Verizon customers.
